Heinrich Hahne - Founder of Heinrich Hahne K.G.
100 years hahne. 100 years of people who have shaped the company. 100 years of experience born of passion.
We look back on the founder, Heinrich Hahne.
When Heinrich Hahne founded his own company in Datteln in 1926, he probably had no idea that his small factory producing shoe polish and floor wax would one day become a Europe-wide specialist in building protection. But his instinct for quality, his perseverance, and above all his conviction that protection is a basic need – for materials, buildings, and people – laid the foundation for the development of a brand that has endured for 100 years: hahne.
“Preserve what matters.”

The Early Years – From Idea to Manufactory
Heinrich Hahne was a pragmatic doer. In the 1920s, a time marked by economic uncertainty, he focused on products that people needed in their everyday lives: shoe polish and floor wax. His products stood for quality and reliability – qualities that quickly built trust and won over a growing customer base.
But Hahne was more than just an entrepreneur. He was an observer who recognized that many materials and surfaces needed more protection than simple household cleaning could provide. His gaze always turned to wherever he saw potential – and where others saw problems, he saw solutions.
New Challenges in a New Decade
With the onset of the 1930s, and especially in the years leading up to World War II, industrial demands began to change. Germany’s economy was heavily influenced by mining, the steel industry, and shipping. These industries suffered from corrosion, material wear, and the effects of the weather.
Heinrich Hahne reacted quickly
In 1939 , his company developed the first corrosion-resistant coatings for coal mines, steel mills, and the shipping industry. In doing so, he solved a real problem facing the industry—and at the same time set the course for the company’s technical focus, which remains central to this day: We protect values.

The Postwar Period – The Dawn of Modern Building Protection Solutions
After World War II, the demand for durable, quick-to-apply protective materials continued to rise. In 1946, the company began producing bitumen-based protective coatings, which became indispensable for reconstruction efforts. Bitumen was robust, weather-resistant, and versatile—perfect for waterproofing buildings, industrial structures, and infrastructure.
For Hahne, this was not just the next step in product development, but part of a long-term vision: protection should be approached holistically – and buildings should remain usable for as long as possible.
Expanding the Product Line – Preserving What Matters
In the decades that followed, the company steadily expanded its expertise in building protection. Bitumen applications were followed in the 1970s by the first thick bitumen coatings, and then in the 1980s by system solutions for::
- Masonry restoration
- Basement waterproofing
- Industrial flooring
In this way, Heinrich Hahne’s legacy was consistently carried forward: each new product reinforced the concept of protection that he had articulated in 1926.
Der Progress Lives On
Although Heinrich Hahne did not personally witness the later development of his company, his pioneering spirit continues to shape the company to this day.
In 1998, hahne became part of the Sievert Baustoffgruppe, a strong family-owned company with over 60 locations across Europe. There, its approach – developing sustainable solutions that benefit people and buildings – is carried forward and continuously refined.
Today, hahne is a modern partner for professionals in the field of building protection. Its products protect buildings both indoors and outdoors, whether in new construction, renovation, private residential projects, or commercial settings.
The Legacy of a Visionary
Heinrich Hahne was a man who turned the simple principle of “protection” into a successful life’s work. From shoe polish to corrosion protection to modern sealing systems – his products always had one goal: to preserve what matters.
His entrepreneurial approach – pragmatic, solution-oriented, and responsible – has created a company that, even after nearly 100 years, remains firmly rooted in the foundation he laid.
